 ”A Letter of Thanks!”

by: Lori Jacobs

Today June 1, 2010 marks my one-year anniversary with World Camp Fitness.  Little did I know a year ago how much I was going to change not only physically, but mentally and not only change myself but others.  I started Crossfit because I was tired of jumping from gym to gym, going from diet to diet, making excuses, and taking pills.  I wanted to become healthy, strong and feel comfortable in my own skin.  I wanted to prove the doctors that told me I would never be able to straighten my arm fully straight in the air again wrong.  I remember on my first day saying, “I want to do what everyone else is doing.”  This is before I knew the rule about doing 40 burpees when you say, “I can’t.”  This is before I knew that a coach or a teammate would be standing right next to me every step of the way pushing me beyond any limit I ever dreamed of.  This is before I knew that World Camp Fitness wasn’t just another place to workout but a community of members that help, encourage and support each other.  In a community it is known that together you can accomplish anything!  That is how World Camp Fitness’ community is, a sense of belonging and togetherness.

Thank you to ALL at World Camp Fitness for helping me become the person I am today.  My life in the last year has been completely changed.  I am healthier and stronger than ever, I have more energy than I’ve had in a long time, I sleep better, I’ve lost weight, and I finally feel comfortable in my own skin!  I’m enjoying life!  My journey as a member of WCF will continue and I look forward to each and everyday as a member of the crossfit community!

Congratulations to the Affiliate Team (Walt, Shae, Chris “Bill”, Shelby, Cristy and Sam) for the great showing this past weekend at the Dirty South CrossFit Regionals! Not only did they earn the privilege of World Camp being recognized as in the top 3 fittest gyms in the state, they looked damn good doing it! World Camp would like to thank everyone for their support both on sight and at home! We would especially like to thank Nike and Walt Foy from Kesslers Team Sports  for the gear worn during the competition!

(Event #2, 2x50m Tire Flip/ 200 Burpee Tire Jumps)

IMG_7965
Day 2 of the Dirty South Qualifier definitely lived up to it’s name. Teams of 4 were to flip 2 tires, somewhere in the 380lbs. range, 50 meters then perform 200 team Burpee tire jumps only to flip them back to the start line. Out of the 43 teams competing, only 38 even finished the event in the allocated 12min time frame. World Camp, by far the youngest affiliate finished 18th with a time of 10:24!  Words can never express the depth of respect and gratitude I have for the 6 that are in the competition representing World Camp! This event was just one of those that you couldn’t really practice for; it was just what we called “Grunt Work”.
IMG_7970Tomorrow’s event is twofold. We are placed in the second to last heat, currently 14th place, so we are in definite contention for the top 8. First off is a Team 5,000 meter row and then less than 20min later we are to complete a grueling chipper full of Front Squats, Push Presses, Deadlifts, a three 200m Farmers Walks and three 200m runs. We are doing good to get video of the entire weekend so I can compile all footage for the community to see. The team and I would like to thank all of you who are constantly texting, e-mailing and sending your support our way! The community that is World Camp should be very proud of these 6. The entire results can be seen by clicking here!

Please remember that there will only be 2 groups on Monday! One group will be at 10am and the other at 5pm.

 "What is World Camp CrossFit?"

a testimonial by Merrit Logan

My World Camp CrossFit experience began almost one year ago with 21 humiliating minutes.  I was 38 years old, at an all-time high on the scales, and in terrible shape.  My best friend of 13 years invited me to join her small group and encouraged me to “try it” just one time.  I agreed but due to a family emergency, ended up alone in the group.  I was a nervous wreck but completely confident that I could do whatever workout was given.  Well….after 21 minutes of ladder drills, pushups, squats (NO knee below hip), and situps, I was dying and DONE.  I was so sore the next day, I could barely work.  I wasn’t sure that I could ever go back;  except that on June 8, 2009, I looked in the mirror and really saw me for the first time in years.  I was not impressed!  Despite the soreness, I continued training.  In August, I began open classes and loved it!  By the end of Fall, I was regularly attending two classes a day and feeling GREAT!  World Camp has changed me inside and out.  I have lost some much needed pounds but more importantly I have become stronger mentally as well as physically.  It is nearly impossible to describe what World Camp CrossFit means to me but here are a few thoughts:

World Camp CrossFit is…….

a deadlift;  a snatch;  a power clean;  a shoulder press;  a back squat;  a pull up;  a burpee;  a double under (or lack thereof);  a sumo deadlift high pull;  a box jump;  a band;  taped hands;  a sled;  a sprint; Fran, Karen, Helen, Angie, and Grace;  The Filthy 50;  Fight Gone Bad;  tabata everything;  Hero Workouts – complete with real stories about real heroes;  The Fitness Challenge;  rowing;  a cashout;  “in 3, 2, 1”;  a time clock;  team workouts;  AMRAP;  wall ball;  bloody hands;  more tape;  good music;  bad music;  egos checked at the door, and more personally,

World Camp CrossFit is….

a workout partner who runs backward for 200 meters so You won’t walk;  your new PR;  your friend’s new PR;  your first pull up without a band;  your first completely RX’d WOD;  a coach who runs with you when you are struggling;  a better time;  a text when you don’t make your usual group;  a mother, a father and 3 brothers training together;  a classmate defying physical limitations;  new friends;  old friends;  husbands and wives training together;  texting the WOD to friends after an early a.m. class;  watching a friend “nail” a difficult workout;  wondering what is coming tomorrow;  sisters training together;  a coach who stays with you for 13 minutes and 29 seconds encouraging you and telling you when to breath as you do 100 burpees for time for the second time in a day;  watching your children train the CrossFit way;  running a 5K;  chatting in the parking lot through the next class;  the “good” sore;  and a coach who never allows you to settle and who always inspires you to be your best.

World Camp CrossFit places no value on age, race, socioeconomic status, or athletic ability.  Instead it is a community of friends working side by side and striving to be the best they can be each day.  No, World Camp CrossFit is not for everyone, but it is for me.

Remember, NO SATURDAY CLASS!!!

 See you all next week!

(Saturday group after playing World Camp Baseball)

What is a "Creed?"

Creed \'kreed\

[ME crede, from OE creeda, from Latin credo ("I believe" the first word of the Apostles' and Nicene creeds), from credere to believe, trust, entrust; akin to OIr cretid "he believes"]

1: a brief authoritative formula of religious belief

2: a set of fundamental beliefs

    3: a guiding principle

IMG_7845

On the wall at World Camp there is a creed that reads, "There are those in this world who refuse. Refuse to settle. Refuse to quit. Those who are not content with simply meeting the standard but only in striving to set it. They are not special and they know this. They just know there are depths of commitment in all of us that few are willing to ever go to. It is here that they find out what they are made of. It is here that they are the happiest. This is their Home." May this be a constant reminder to all that enter this fitness sanctuary to always be the best you can be and never settle.

IMG_7249I just wanted to drop you a  line about the results of my most recent physical and blood-work. Dr Stubbs first questioned me about my weight loss (17lbs) to make sure it was a result of exercise and diet rather than being sick. The results that are are occurring inside by body are even more astounding.

I would not trade this experience for anything in the world.  Although, the workouts are tough and I am sore almost every day, I seem to have become somewhat addicted to the Crossfit experience. I look forward each day to the “FUN” and torture that Kris and his trainers will inflict on me each day.  If it were not for the coaching and the encouraging from them, I know I would not be where I am today.  I may not be the strongest or the fastest but I work hard when I am there.” – Lynda M.

“I now have gone from a 40” waist to having 36” loose on me and I see muscle definition that I have not seen since high school. For the first time since before my children were born I am under 200lbs.

More important that all of this my wife has her husband back and my children have the father that I always should have been. I no longer associate my fitness level with how much I can bench but with how much living I can squeeze out of each and everyday. I refuse to settle for getting by and I make the choice to be a better me everyday.” – Shane W.

“Three months ago I was at a point where I was, for lack of a better description – lost; however, after the last 3 months I realize that I can do anything! Along with the exercise regimen at World Camp, I was taught that I needed to put the right food into my body in order for it to respond the way that I wanted.  I was motivated by Kris, the other members, and myself to push beyond the pain and whatever my success was yesterday to a new level of success today.  To date I have lost just over 50 lbs. and am in the best athletic condition I have been in for a very long time.” – Derrick W.

postheadericon What is your excuse?

(Good group this past Saturday!)

"What is Your Excuse?"

by: Kris Morrill

(As seen in the Albany Herald 5/16/10)

I have been in the fitness business for some time now and have had the opportunity to come in contact with literally thousands of people who, at some point, were interested in exercise. There is a good chance that, on average, each one of these individuals have ownership of four to five good excuses on why they are not able to exercise. Some are valid, some are trivial and some are just down right “turn my head so I don’t laugh in your face”, ridiculous. I have compiled a few of the most common “why I can’t exercise” excuses along with some rebuttals in hopes of nudging you along to a commitment to fitness.

“I can’t afford a gym membership” I know that times are tough and I am aware that prices are going up all around us; but, why should our fitness and well being have to play the role of red headed step child? I would never talk politics in this column but let me just throw the term “Health Care” out there. Lets face it, no one knows what the future holds for this system therefore, would it not be better to do some prevention as opposed to correction later down the road? We will make a way to do the things we want. If you really want a gym membership you will get one! With the price wars going on between gyms, you can now get a membership for less than fifteen bucks a month! If you would start drinking water instead of buying soft drinks, BAM!!! There is you gym membership money right there!

“I am too tired after work to exercise” I get it, life is hectic. You get up. Go to work. Work overtime. Then, you rush home and try to relax. The next day, you do it all over again. It seems like there isn’t any energy left for something as strenuous as exercise. Luckily, the equation works quite the opposite. With regular exercise, your energy level will increase. A regular exercise routine will often times help you to unwind after a busy day and will allow you to rest better at night. As an added bonus, if you work out all of that aggression and hostility you picked up at work your family may even like you better…

“It’s hard and too much like work” Well, I am sorry… There is probably only a handful of things in life get you heated, sweaty, gasping for air like a fish out of water that you could look over at someone and honestly say, “this is fun!” Exercise is work! You are building a better more healthy body. Nothing good in life comes without work, remember that! If you are that person who has never worked for anything in your life, don’t start now. May you die before you reproduce so as to not flood the world with others like you…

“I just don’t have time” This is top of the top! I have heard this more times than I care to admit. Owning my own business, I know that the days are just not long enough. There is always something to do and someone to help. It feels like the days run together and there is never enough time to get it all done. You will always make time for the things you want! 30 minutes a day would change your life, I promise! Commit and put in on your schedule. Make fitness and everyday scheduled event. This is your life we are talking about and you only have the one. What are you waiting for? What is your excuse?

postheadericon Welcome to the Community…

IMG_7432

(Eve, Merritt, RIo and Joy after this Saturday's WOD)

You may be surprised to know the greatest compliment that I have received to date has nothing to do with training. It is that of the community that World Camp has created. When a "newbie" enters for the first time, they are immediately engulfed by those that have been there. There is a sense of family here that can not be denied. Anyone is welcome here but please be aware, it is contagious…

_________________________________________________________________________

IMG_7340 Sled work is a great way to increase speed and explosive power. Keep in mind that an overabundance of weight is not necessary. Depending on the surface that you are training on, as little as 25lbs. plus the weight of the sled may be adequate.

IMG_7203 Incorporating some interval training, such as runs, into your weight training routine might just ramp up your workouts and take you to the next level! Holding weights, Medicine Balls or Sand Bags can turn the intensity up that much more!

I would like to apologize for the lack of up date on the site lately. Between acclimating new members to the camp and the expansion, I have been stretched pretty thin… Soon we will be totally done with the remodel and things will be back to some state of normalcy, thank you for baring with me!
