A New Chapter
When I first breathed life into World Camp CrossFit, I never could have imagined that a day like today would come. A day that is tainted with bitter sweet feelings and emotions as I am saying “fair well” to the very first coach brought on here at World Camp. Bitter sweet because of the loss here but the the realization that one of my friends and colleagues is moving on to chase his dream and better himself. Today will be the last day that Evan, “Big Easy” as I call him, will be coaching here. He is moving South to Destin, Fl. where he will continue along the coaching and fitness path he has set for himself. Below is a e-mail that he has asked to be posted on the site. We will be having a “See you later” party for Evan tonight from 6-9pm here at the gym. Please stop by if just for a bit to see him off! From all of us here at World Camp, we wish you the best Evan and look forward to spending our vacations working out with you at the beach!

I remember jogging down the sidewalk from where I used to work, clutching the door to the old World Camp and swinging it open to find Kris kneeling over a freshly painted bright blue box. I had no idea what it was for, or what I was in for in the coming months.
Looking back on it now, that’s what this all is, memories. Memories, and stories, of people doing things they never thought they would. A family of people truly interested in being better, and working every day to achieve it. People that realize there is beauty in hard work, and that you can either make time or make excuses, not both.
I’ve seen a lot that Crossfit has to offer and the tools to share it with the world; however, what we have is not Crossfit, it is so much more. Crossfit cannot bring people together the way we have come together. These bonds are built with sweat and ripped hands, high fives and hugs, paleo muffins and Bud lights. Take credit, you are part of something amazing, you are amazing.
To prevent myself from rambling I’m just going to list off some of my favorite memories over the past 15 months:
Walking out to a fight with my coach and friend who always has my back
Watching a cancer survivor do a situp even though she had most of her abdominals removed during surgery.
Running up a mountain with two friends not letting any of us stop
Going toe to toe with a black belt on a power clean PR
Every time someone flipped me off
Helping a friend through 100 burpees like an estranged lamaze instructor
Celebrating about a shrinking cyst
Running my first 5k on a weeks notice
Sharing a beer with some triathletes
Every person I ever worked with on fight gone bad, ever.
Doing burpee buy-ins and almost losing count
4th of July
Training an entire staff of teachers.
Every single girl (or guy) I’ve made cry ![]()
All the curses I got during my birthday workout
Every PR
I cannot write thank you into this letter enough for all the experience and faith you all have put into me. And if you ever end up in Destin Florida please do not hesitate to give me a call. I would love to see all my family again

“StrongMen/Woman”

Last night Darton College had a “Strong Man” competition for the students so Jessica, Bryson and Steven opted at the last minute to jump in. Now, although we do NOT focus on the “Power Lifting” aspect as much as GPP (General Physical Preparedness) spectators and competitors alike stood in awe at some of the lifts that these three where pulling off. Steven PR’d o his Dead Lift at 375lbs. while Jessica (360lbs.) and Bryson (500lbs.) did the same. By the end of the night everyone wanted to know where in the world we came from! Everyone at World Camp would be so very proud of Steven, Jessica and Bryson for their performance last night!
Getting “STONED”
Today I was talking to someone who was thinking about joining World Camp but was scared that she might not be able to “do it.” I gave her the usual assurances that Crossfit is scalable to each individual’s level and that everyone works at his or her own pace. I ended our conversation by telling her that she just might surprise herself at what she is able to accomplish.
You see, I have the absolute joy of working with beginners to Crossfit. I get to watch people do things that they did not think they were capable of doing as they overcome sedentary lifestyles, weight issues, injuries, disabilities, age, and so on. Although I may aspire to be like the big dogs in the gym, I am inspired by these brave souls who have decided they are ready to make a change in their lives and make themselves better.
I have seen amazing things in my World Camp 101 class. This morning, for example, my class broke in the new “Atlas stones” we have all been eyeing curiously. I have to admit that I doubted whether or not my class would be able to do the WOD which consisted of 3 rounds of a 400m row, 7 ground to shoulder (GTS) lifts with a 45 pound stone, walk with the stone to the other end of the room, 7 more GTS, and a walk back with the stone. This was our fifth class as a group, and I already had the 20 and 30 pound medballs planned for backup. I was truly in awe as I watched these women push themselves to complete the WOD (no medballs in sight!), looking like they had been Crossfitting for months!
I once was asked to describe in 5 words or less why I Crossfit. I answered, “To see if I can.” And isn’t that part of the joy of this crazy sport we all love? To say to ourselves, “I can’t believe I just did that!” To surprise ourselves with what we are able to do with our bodies. To dig a little deeper and work a little harder to accomplish what we previously thought was impossible.
So to my beginner’s class- thank you for inspiring me this morning! And to those who are thinking about doing Crossfit- come join us. I guarantee you will surprise yourself at what you will be able to achieve!

Remember that we will be having a “Going Away” party for Evan this Friday at 6pm therefore there will be no 6pm class! Evan is leaving us, moving to Destin Florida and will continue his coaching there. It was an absolute honor to watch him grow as a Coach over the last 2 years and he will be greatly missed. Please make plans to attend, if just for a bit, to wish him well. We are also asking that the membership bring snacks and such as we did for the Christmas Party.
You Will Be Better!
1. I will promise to do my best. My best will vary from day to day, from hour to hour, from minute to minute. But in that minute, I will do the very best I can.
2. Lactic acid is my friend. The wind is my friend. Anything that opposes me is actually helping me to become stronger. If I had no opposition, I would be weak.
3. If I can run, I run. If I have to walk, I walk. If I am forced to crawl, I crawl. And then I rest and live to fight another day.
4. I fear no man, but I fear my workout. If I don’t fear my workout, it isn’t hard enough.
5. I may puke. I may cry. But I will not quit. Ever.
6. I never cheat. There is no honor in cheating. What joy can there be in a victory I did not earn?
7. The workout missed is the opportunity missed. I will not cheat myself of the opportunity to become a better athlete and person.
8. I understand the value of the push-up, the pull-up, the sit-up, the squat, and the deadlift. Just as there are a million ways to make chicken so too are there a million ways to squat, sit up, pull up, push up, and deadlift.
9. I will give everything I have. And then I will find more within myself.
10. I don’t complain. Complaining is for crybabies. There are 11,232 babies born in the U.S. everyday. I will leave the crying to them and I will soldier on.
11. I will bite off challenges, spit out results, and beg for more. What are you going to do?

Being “Better Than Yesterday” is not just a sign that is up on the wall at World Camp, it is a day to day decision that you are forced to make everyday. It is a desire that we should all have inside of us to be just a little bit better than the day before. Some days the weights will feel heavier, the clock will seem to tick faster and your body just doesn’t want to move like you feel it should. In this very moment you have a decision to make. You could succumb to the pain, the breathlessness, the hurt… But that would be too easy. In this moment, it is just you and whatever it is that is standing in your way. You will realize that today it may be a Bar or a Stone and tomorrow it may be a sandbag or a Kettle Bell… What are you going to do?! I will tell you! You will stand tall, take a breath and get that look in your eye like you are some wild animal fixed on it’s prey. You will go to a place that no one could ever understand until they are faced with the same and you will give everything you have and yes, you will be better!
Wednesday!
I am sorry for the lack of web site attendance lately, we have been very busy around the camp as of late but will try to do better in the future!

From everyone here at World Camp, GREAT JOB and CONGRATS to Deirdre Allegood for running the Half Marathon in Jacksonville, Fla. this past weekend! Deirdre was a little apprehensive going into the race seeings how she has not run since last Fall and was relying solely on her fitness level attained here at World Camp throughout the week. How did she do? She ended up with an 11min. mile pace and finished up before most that have been practicing for such a feat! We are all very proud of you D!

I am pleased to announce the beginning of a Stretch/ Yoga class during the week! Beverly from Kai Yoga will be here at 11am on Tuesdays and Thursdays for 30 minutes of Shoulder and Hip Openers! This is a great addition to the day’s line up!
Spotlight: Lindsey Sanders
Name: Lindsey Sanders
Occupation: Math Teacher
Hobbies: Playing Piano, playing Rook
Started World Camp: March 11, 2010
Favorite Lift: Deadlift 305lbs. and Cleans 145lbs.
Least favorite Lift: Shoulder Press
Favorite WOD: Any workout with the 21-15-9 rep scheme because they feel so achievable!
Least Favorite WOD: “GRIFF” or anything that involves 100 pull ups.
Interesting Factoid: I once ate a Guinea Pig while hiking in Peru.
Why do I train? 1) Because I am searching for “FIT,” and I know that every time I walk through the doors of World Camp , I am one step closer to finding it! 2) I find that when I am disciplined in one area of my life, that discipline spills over to all other aspects of my life.
Goals: Complete a CrossFit competition. Do a Handstand Push Up and a Muscle Up! “It is funny how your bucket list will change when you start training at World Camp CrossFit…)

Garage Games 2011
World Camp Black in Team WOD 1
Well, the results are in for the 2011 Garage Games and the kick off of the “Garage Games Series!” World Camp teams did a phenomenal job over the weekend! The score card is not a true representation of how well each team performed. With a few tweaks in the strategy department, all 3 World Camp teams would have been in the top of the standings. Great job to all! World Camp Blue, who coined themselves as the OPT team, showed remarkable strength and poise this weekend knocking out some heavy hitters early in the “Tug-o-War” competition. The Gray team took a hit when a couple of the members were not able to make it to Woodstock at the last minute and another took ill with the flu while at the competition however, handled the situation with great stride. I am very proud to be a part of something so amazing. Thank you to all who have their hand in making World Camp CrossFit what it is. If you have pictures of the weekend’s events, please get them to me so I can make a “Photo Archive” on the site for everyone to see!

What is a Picture Worth?

I am sure that you have all heard the saying, “A picture is worth 1000 words” right? Well, these pictures are worth so much more than that! This is Sheryl, a Real Estate Agent be trade but a World Camper through and through! Sheryl looked to World Camp as a “last straw” she would say before doing something drastic to aid in getting weight off. What she found here was much more! Sheryl found herself, or at least a better version of it. Battling through aches and pains of old to find strength and endurance. Sheryl is a new person. We are all so proud of you Sheryl and it has been an absolute pleasure having you as a part of the World Camp family. You are motivation to us all! Keep up the good hard work!
